Not for lack of love — quite the opposite — but because its architecture is a true engineering puzzle. Some good news has just dropped, though: Yaba Sanshiro has reached a significant milestone in the way it reproduces the console’s graphics rendering.**\n\nThe issue is as old as Saturn emulation itself. The console’s VDP1 graphics chip rendered its sprites and polygons as quadrilaterals — four-sided shapes. Modern GPUs, meanwhile, only understand triangles. To convert one into the other, emulators have traditionally split those quads into increasingly smaller fragments, a technique known as tessellation. It worked… more or less. But once games were upscaled to high definition, the flaws became visible: warped textures, missing pixels along the edges, gaps between polygons. The kind of detail that goes completely unnoticed on a CRT, but quickly becomes annoying at higher resolutions.\n\n### A completely new approach\n\nWith version 1.20.5, developer devMiyax is changing the paradigm entirely. Instead of continuing to force Saturn rendering into the triangular mold of modern GPUs, Yaba Sanshiro now uses compute shaders — a type of GPU program that bypasses the traditional graphics pipeline to work directly at the pixel level. In practical terms, instead of starting from a texture and projecting it onto the screen, the emulator now works backward: for every displayed pixel, it traces back to the original VDP1 coordinates and calculates what the real Saturn would have shown at that exact spot. Pas par manque d'amour — au contraire — mais parce que son architecture est un véritable casse-tête d'ingénierie. Une bonne nouvelle vient pourtant de tomber : Yaba Sanshiro vient de franchir un cap significatif dans sa façon de reproduire le rendu graphique de la machine.**\n\nLe problème est vieux comme l'émulation Saturn elle-même. Le chip graphique VDP1 de la console dessinait ses sprites et polygones sous forme de quadrilatères — des formes à quatre côtés. Les GPU modernes, eux, ne connaissent que les triangles. Pour convertir les uns en les autres, les émulateurs découpaient jusqu'ici ces quads en fragments de plus en plus petits, une technique appelée tessellation. Ça marchait à peu près. Mais en upscalant les jeux en haute définition, cela finissait par se voir : textures déformées, pixels manquants sur les bords, interstices entre les polygones. Le genre de détail qui ne gêne pas du tout sur un CRT, et qui devient agaçant dès qu'on monte en résolution.\n\n### Une nouvelle approche de fond\n\nAvec la version 1.20.5, le développeur devMiyax change complètement de paradigme. Plutôt que de continuer à plier le rendu Saturn dans le moule triangulaire des GPU modernes, Yaba Sanshiro utilise désormais des compute shaders — un type de programme GPU qui s'affranchit du pipeline graphique classique pour travailler directement au niveau du pixel. Concrètement, au lieu de partir d'une texture pour la projeter à l'écran, l'émulateur fait le chemin inverse : pour chaque pixel affiché, il remonte aux coordonnées d'origine du VDP1 et calcule ce que la vraie Saturn aurait affiché à cet endroit précis.
